Cebu is a small city ringed by water, so the plan is beach mornings, cafe afternoons, and day-boat trips.

Mactan and the beach strips

Mactan, joined to Cebu City by twin bridges, is where most visitors swim: white-sand resorts along the east coast, with public beaches and island-hopping boats at Maribago and Cordova. Water is warm and clear, snorkelling is good off the boat, and Mactan seafood grills beat the city centre for dinner.

Old Cebu and the Sto. Nino

Cebu City is mostly a working Philippine city, but the historic core is worth a half-day: Basilica del Sto. Nino, the 16th-century Augustinian cross Magellan's men left behind, and Fort San Pedro. Sinulog in January is the one week the city feels like a postcard; book months ahead if that is why you are coming.

Island-hopping day trips

Bohol is a 2-hour ferry north: Chocolate Hills, the tarsier sanctuary, and a Loboc River lunch cruise pack a full day. Moalboal south (3 hours by road) has sardine runs and thresher sharks off Panagsama Beach. Malapascua, Bantayan and Camotes are quieter. Most travellers book two or three rather than try to do everything.

Eat

Visayan food is the underrated Philippine cuisine: lighter than Manila, more seafood, and a Spanish-influenced bread-and-sweet tradition.

What to order

Lechon is the headline: suckling pig roasted over coconut husks, with Carcar fiercely defended as the source town. Add sinigang, kinilaw (ceviche in vinegar and coconut), and puso (rice steamed in hanging palm-leaf pouches). Where to eat

Larsian BBQ is the late-night institution: pick sticks, pay by the plate, eat at the bench. STK ta Bay! does a strong Visayan tasting menu; Anzani for date night; Sutukil for seafood with the boats tied up next to the table. Nomads.com's cafe pick is Cafe Maru; Cafe Namoo is the alt; Coffee Zone Cebu is the 24/7 option.

Where to stay depends on which Cebu you came for: city for work, Mactan for the beach.

Cebu City / IT Park

Base for remote work and most first-timers. IT Park (Lahug) is the modern office-and-condo district with coworking and reliable fibre; Banilad and Ayala are similar a bit further out. Numbeo's city-centre 1-bedroom averages ₱31,060 (~$540)/month; outside centre ~₱19,050 (~$330).

Mactan resorts

Beach-first: the resort strip on Mactan puts you 30 minutes from the airport and steps from the water. International brands, pools, in-house dive shops. Per-night rates start around $80 in low season, double over Christmas and Chinese New Year.

Quiet alternatives

Moalboal and Oslob on the south coast are slow-living alternatives: lower cost, fewer foreigners, good diving. The trade is thinner work infrastructure (fewer coworking spaces, slower home broadband), so they work better for a working holiday than a deadlines week.

Logistics

Mactan-Cebu International (CEB) is the country's second-busiest airport and the gateway to the Visayas. A Grab to IT Park runs ₱250-400 (~$5-7) and 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. The terminal is clean and modern, with direct flights to most Asian hubs and intra-island flights to Siargao, Coron, and Bohol (Panglao).

Inside the city, jeepneys and Grab work for most trips. Cards are 'OK almost everywhere' per nomads.com, but keep pesos for jeepneys, small eateries, and wet markets. Tipping is not expected.

Weather: tropical, 26-32C year-round. Dry season Dec-May; the rainy and typhoon season Jun-Nov can knock out power and internet for stretches in the islands. Plan heavier deadlines outside the wet season when you can.
