Vientiane Travel Guide - Laos' Slow Capital on the Mekong

Everything worth seeing sits inside a few square kilometres, and most of it is free or a couple of dollars.

Pha That Luang and the stupa circuit

Pha That Luang is the national monument: a 45-metre gilded stupa built in 1566 by King Setthathirath, restored in 1953, said to enshrine a relic of the Buddha. Go early. Walking distance away are Wat Si Saket, the city's oldest surviving temple, with thousands of small Buddha images set into its cloister wall, and That Dam, a weathered black stupa in a roundabout.

Patuxai and the riverside

Patuxai, the concrete victory arch built between 1957 and 1968, is the landmark you climb for a view over the whole city. From there it is a straight walk down Lane Xang Avenue to the Mekong, where the promenade fills at dusk with aerobics classes, food carts and beer stalls looking across to Thailand.

COPE and the Buddha Park

The COPE Visitor Centre is the most affecting thing in the city: Laos is the most heavily bombed country per capita on earth, and the exhibits on unexploded ordnance are free and quietly devastating. Twenty-five kilometres south, the Buddha Park is a sculpture garden of concrete Hindu and Buddhist figures.

Eat

Lao food is Isan-adjacent but its own thing: herby, grilled, and built around sticky rice rather than noodles.

What to order

Laap (minced meat with toasted rice powder, mint and lime), tam mak hoong (green papaya salad, funkier than the Thai version), ping gai (grilled chicken) and khao niaw, the sticky rice basket that comes with everything. Numbeo's June 2026 snapshot prices an inexpensive meal at 55,000 kip, about $2.50.

Bakeries, coffee and the evening market

The colonial layer is still edible: baguettes and pate at the bakery-cafes along Samsenthai Road. Laos grows its own coffee, and a cappuccino runs about 38,000 kip ($1.70). At night the Mekong market grills fish by the kilo, and a mid-range dinner for two averages 400,000 kip ($18).

Where to Stay

The city is small enough that almost nowhere is inconvenient. What changes is the walk to the river and the noise.

Riverside (Quai Fa Ngum)

Guesthouses and mid-range hotels facing the Mekong, walking distance to the night market and the promenade. The most pleasant base, and still cheap.

Town centre (Nam Phu and Samsenthai)

The practical middle: cafes, travel agents, the morning market at Talat Sao, and Patuxai 20 minutes away.

Outside the centre

Numbeo's June 2026 snapshot puts a one-bedroom in the centre at 14,445,875 kip (about $649) a month and outside the centre at 9,303,930 kip ($418). A three-bedroom in the centre averages 27,074,550 kip ($1,216).

Logistics

Wattay International Airport (VTE) is in town, 15 minutes from the riverside. There is no metro, so transport means tuk-tuk, metered taxi, or the Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise routes. Everything central is walkable.

Two rail facts matter. The Boten-Vientiane railway (the Laos-China line, opened December 2021) runs north to Vang Vieng in about 2 hours 30 and Luang Prabang in about 3 hours 35, replacing a brutal all-day bus. Khamsavath station crosses the Mekong to Nong Khai in Thailand, so you can arrive by train from Bangkok without flying. If you are stringing a route together, the natural next legs are the Hanoi guide and Siem Reap.

Money is the friction. nomads.com rates Vientiane cash only, especially for foreigners, and the kip has been volatile: World Bank data shows inflation at 31% in 2023, 23% in 2024 and 7.7% in 2025. Carry kip for markets, dollars for larger bills.

One admin task: since 1 September 2025 every foreign passport holder entering through Wattay, Luang Prabang, Pakse or Friendship Bridge I must file the Lao Digital Immigration Form at immigration.gov.la within three days of arrival.
